Cocaine

His hands were shaking. Racetrack locked the door to the bathroom and reached for the bag in his pocket, calming. This was not healthy.

He'd been fighting with his father again... But now he was at Mush's, where no one was going to smack him. And soon, nothing would bother him at all.

If you got bad news, you wanna kick them blues, cocaine.
When your day is done and you wanna run, cocaine.

He looked in the mirror. He was too skinny, but he didn't care. He felt good.

She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie...
Cocaine.

Tender

Blink threw him a casual smile, and Mush's heart beat faster. He tried to push the feeling back, but couldn't. He hated this; hated himself for it. But he wanted Blink so badly...

Tender is my heart
For screwing up my life
Lord I need to find
Someone who can heal my mind

Sometimes he thought he'd just leave the city and maybe that would help. Just leave Blink behind, but he couldn't. He'd rather stay, and wait, and hope.

Come on, come on, come on
Love's the greatest thing
That we have
I'm waiting for that feeling to come

Justified

"Don't be so quick to... walk away, come on--"

"Please shut up." Dutchy groaned.

"--dance with me, I want to--"

"Please, please shut up."

"--rock your body, please stay--"

"Please remind me again why I date you?"

Specs glanced over at him and flashed a grin. "Because you love me. And I love Justin. Ergo, you let me listen to Justin while I drive."

"It's a four hour trip."

"Yep."

"We're twenty minutes in to it."

"Yep."

"...Please tell me you're not planning to--"

"--You wanna play, come on, dance with me..."

Dutchy groaned.

Underwhelmed

"Rejected again?" Jack asked, not bothering to look up from his textbook.

"Yes." David collapsed on his best friend's bed.

"Oh?"

"Well... she's obviously a person with a cause, I told her that I don't smoke or drink..."

"And?"

"She told me to loosen up." He sighed. "She's smart, she skips her classes and gets good grades and I go to mine rain or shine... She just doesn't see we'd be good together, just rolled her eyes, her beautiful eyes..."

"She sounds kinda shallow."

"But the point is the feeling. That is obviously in my heart, but not in hers."

Slip Away

"You want to party, blondie?" It had started so simply, with just that question. He'd thought it had been an offer for sex. It wasn't.

Dutchy carefully arranged the line and leaned down.

He'd been dumped, brutally. Harshly. Nearly two years they'd been together, only for...

The words came back to him again.

"I'm not sure I ever loved you, Dutch."

And when she lets me slip away
She turns me on all my violence is gone
Nothing is wrong, I just slip away and I am gone
Nothing is wrong, she turns me on

He inhaled, and slipped away.

Deeper Than Beauty

Dutchy was impressed by Specs. The longer Specs tutored him, the more he realized... This kid was smart. Just like the teachers said. He didn't work so hard to suck up, it was because he liked it.

And your glasses, your hideous glasses
When you remove them I would rather skip my classes and be caught

Sometimes, Specs would smile at him, and Dutchy would see past the glasses.

Still I know you go deeper than your beauty
You go well above and beyond the call of duty
To your country and your school
But I grew up too cool

Want

Spot waited for Race to round the corner and stepped out in his way. Race stared at him, like he knew what Spot had seen: Racetrack and Skittery, like no two boys should be.

And he wanted it.

Saw it all and I can't deny
It's a hard life living a lie

He pressed Race against the wall and kissed; Race tried to shove him away, but Spot wouldn't let him. He didn't care if it was wrong. It was what he wanted, goddamnit.

If it feels good do it even if you shouldn't
Don't let people mess you around

Autobiography

"Faggot."

Race clenched his fist and turned away, glanced at Mush. Mush's face fell and he leaned down to gather his things from the floor, where they'd been thrown.

"Gonna defend your boyfriend?" came the sneer.

"Tony..." Mush mumbled. "Let's just go."

I've stayed in school this long
But still no one will tell me why
They figured who would know
Better than I?

This was supposedly the best education available, but Race couldn't stand the school. He wanted to be in Blink's garage with Spot, and to let Blink comfort Mush, who looked shaken.

Instead, he just kept walking.

Good Day Sunshine

Bumlets was already dressed by the time Specs was doing his best to drag Dutchy out of bed. He reached for the cup of coffee he'd already made and listened:

"Good day, sunshine."

"Please don't wake me, no don't shake me, leave me where I am... I'm only sleeping..."

Specs pulled the pillow out from under Dutchy's head. "I told you before; I can't do that."

"But I'm so tired, I haven't slept a wink..." Dutchy pulled the blanket over his head.

Bumlets set the coffee mug down. "You two are doing that speaking in lyrics thing again, aren't you?"

Country House

City dweller, successful fella,
Thought to himself, "Oops, I've got a lot of money..."
Caught in a rat race, terminally

It wasn't that Pulitzer exactly meant to hurt the newsies; he did think they'd look on it as a challenge. It hadn't occurred to him that they didn't want a challenge... But he couldn't just admit that he was wrong, could he?

He couldn't lose that kind of power to a bunch of street kids...

But...

He's got morning glory and life's a different story
Everything's going Jackanory
Touched with his own mortality

It preys on him,
He's getting thin...

No Distance Left to Run

David's hands were shaking as he read the letter, addressed him in scrawled, barely legible handwriting. No return address, but that didn't matter. He already knew.

It's over
You don't need to tell me

He looked at the words on the page without really reading him. But he didn't need to. Jack was gone; he was in Santa Fe, with someone else. And wishing David the best.

It's over
I knew it would end this way
I hope you're with someone who makes you feel
That this life, is a life
Who settles down, stays around...

He dropped the letter.

Hidden

Everywhere, people stare
each and every day
I can see them laugh at me
And I hear them say

This was dangerous. Race sighed as he ran his hands up Skittery's naked back, pulling him closer. Skittery kissed his neck, his cheek, and finally his lips, biting slightly at Race's bottom lip.

Race loved this and he loved Skittery and all he wanted was to walk, hand in hand, where people could see. But that was impossible, so instead, the dark alley meeting and the danger; a passionate kiss could be deadly.

Hey, you got to hide your live away.

I Need You

You don't realize how much I need you
Love you all the time and never leave you

Every morning he woke up, he still expected Race to be there. But instead it was some other kid in the bunk across from his; not the lopsided smile he desperately missed.

But Race was gone. He couldn't stand Spot anymore, so obsessed with power and politics. Not the same person he'd been.

And because of his position, all Spot had to let him go. Because Brooklyn didn't beg.

So come on back to me
I'm lonely as can be
I need you

Only Love

It's only love, and that is all
Why do I feel the way I do?

Jack and Sarah were gazing at each other, and David had to look away. He could feel that... that feeling again. The one that made his heart beat faster when Jack was in the room, and that made him embarrassed and upset when Jack and Sarah were together.

There was no reason for it. He liked Jack with Sarah; he wanted Jack for his brother-in-law. He thought.

But it felt slightly off...

It's only love and that is all
But it's so hard, loving you

Mummy and Daddy

Walk in the park, and it's getting dark, and I don't wanna be alone,
Miss my Mummy and I miss my Daddy won't you please bring them back home

It took Mush a long time to realize what had happened. His parents weren't coming back because they couldn't come back. It was a fire in the tenement, and they had died, while he'd been with his brother in the park.

He was six when it happened, and his brother left him at the lodging house.

Kloppman had tried to explain, but what was there to say to a little kid?

Tired

I'm tired
So tired

"What... Again?"

Blink grinned. "If you're up for it." He ran a finger down Race's chest to the elastic of his boxers.

"I'm exhausted."

Blink waited, and Race sighed. Blink prompted him, "...But..."

"You're irritating. Remind me again why we're together?"

"Because we have fabulous sex." Blink nibbled at Race's ear. "A whole lot."

"Oh, yeah. That." Race groaned. "But I'm tired... I had three classes today and then work..."

"Oh, come on. Please?"

Blink pouted, and that just wasn't fair. Race sighed. "Fine, but this is the last time tonight."

I'm tired of having sex.

El Scorcho

I wish I could get my head outta the sand
'cause I think we'd make a good team
And you would keep my fingernails clean

Blink looked over at Race; looked away. Race was playing cards with a few guys, and there was room at the table... But Blink couldn't just go sit down.

Something about Race, the way he looked at you and smirked, made Blink too nervous to talk to him. The way he looked... The way Blink wanted him.

But that's just a stupid dream that I won't realize
'cause I can't even look in your eyes

Falling For You

I'm shakin' at your touch
I like you way too much
My baby I'm afraid I'm falling for you

He hadn't done this. Race bit his lip and watched as Spot watched him, expectantly. No one came to Brooklyn for no reason... Race wanted to kick himself. He hadn't done this.

Spot Conlon was dangerous and powerful, and he'd as soon kick you as help you out. He didn't have friends, only allies.

Racetrack had definitely not fallen for Spot Conlon.

I'd do about anything to get the hell out alive
Or maybe I would rather settle down with you

Pink Triangle

Jack couldn't believe how incredibly stupid he'd been. He'd thought Sarah had liked him--she seemed to like it enough when he kissed her that once. But she never wanted him to do it again, she pulled away when he put an arm around her, she found reasons to avoid seeing him.

Considering they were going together, that seemed a bit odd.

But the he'd seen Sarah and the girl down the street...

I'm dumb she's a lesbian
I thought I had found the one
We were good as married in my mind
But married in my mind's no good

Fell In Love

And we fell in love
And the sunshine shone from the sunshine above
Fell in love, whole loaf love

It hadn't happened suddenly, or with a huge bang; it had just happened softly and quietly, and so slowly that Blink didn't quite know when it happened. He just knew that, walking through the park one day, Mush reached for his hand and intertwined their fingers...

...And it felt right. Blink gave his hand a squeeze, and that night he kissed Mush the first time, and they were in love. They'd know each other so long, they never had to ask.

Backstabbin'

Fist you turn around and give me that look, yeah

"Race, tell me I'm seeing things... Just, tell me I'm seeing things."

Race stared, and then felt like he'd been punched in the stomach, but covered quickly with his infamous poker face. "No, you ain't seein' things... That's Jack."

He listened to the people around him shout, watched Spot try and break past the police line, helped hold him back, and cheered as David took a swing at his former best friend, who he would never trust again.

How could he trust a scab?

Backstabbin' with a positive hook yeah
