Fashionably Late

"We should go to the party," Blink sighed.

"Yeah. Probably." Mush made no move to get up. He was content where he was, lying with Blink's arms wrapped around him, head on Blink's chest, mostly undressed. It was finally spring, and warm enough that a sheet was all the cover they needed.

"I meant now," Blink said gently.

"Yeah, I know." If anything, Mush snuggled closer. Blink sighed.

"You're not making it any easier to get up, you know."

"That's a real shame, ain't it?"

"Mush, you know Mondie will kill us if we don't go."

"Yeah, I know." He yawned a tiny bit and turned his head so his ear was against Blink's chest. "I can hear your heart beat," he added, as though that would somehow help.

"Mush."

"What?" Mush pouted. "I like listening to your heart beat. It's all nice and… drum-like."

"Okaaaay," Blink said, in a voice that clearly implied he thought his lover had finally gone round the bend. Mush chuckled.

"You're so cute when you're confused."

"Shut up."

"Okay." Mush happily let the room fall silent and snuggled even closer still, then changed his mind and began to cover Blink's chest with light kisses

"Mush!" Blink said in a strangled voice. "Do you–" he tried not to giggle; Mush's lips tickled–"have any idea how late you are going to make us?"

"Are you really telling me you want me to stop?" Mush answered, and let his tongue tease Blink, who couldn't contain his slightly spastic laughs.

"Mush–"

"They can wait. Mondie will understand."

"But–"

"It's called being fashionably late."

"You're ridiculous."

"You already knew that. Now hush, I'm busy." He went back to his fun, and Blink gave up. He knew they wouldn't miss the party entirely, probably, and it made Mush happy.

And it made him very happy.

*

They walked into the party without even being hand-in-hand, as though nothing had happened. Mondie was sitting on a table, surrounded by friends. People were talking, and laughing, and having a generally good time. She looked happy enough, until she glanced up and saw them standing in the doorway.

"So what have you two been up to?" she demanded.

"Oh, just making sure that we could make an impressive entrance," Mush answered cheerfully, and made his way across the room to give her a large hug. "After all, it's always nice to be fashionably late, right?"

She rolled her eyes, but didn't let him out of the hug. Across the room, Blink turned an interesting shade of purple.

"I could use a shirt that color," she mused.

"Happy birthday," was all he could manage in response.
